Imperial Classical Ballet


Imperial Classical Ballet is based on the teaching of the French School at the Paris Opéra. The syllabus, first written in 1913, has evolved to promote the English classical ballet style and to address the changing needs of ballet dancers today. Focusing on technique and an understanding of musical interpretation to provide the essentials of a pure classical training.


The History of Imperial Classical Ballet

Although the French School of Classical Ballet dates back to the early 17th century, Imperial Classical Ballet aims to provide classical training for the 21st century dancer, offering something for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Over its 110-year history the Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty, in all its manifestations, has supported ballet training to achieve, in the words of d’Albert “The elevation and advancement of the Art of Dancing, and the preservation of its ancient prestige and dignity.” It continues to lead and influence the international promotion of the English classical style.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing classical ballet exams are recognised internationally for their quality and excellence. Numerous outstanding teachers, and classical dancers in major international ballet companies, have been wholly trained within the Imperial Classical Ballet syllabi.

Imperial Classical Ballet Events and Awards

The Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty offers a comprehensive programme of competitions and events to foster participation in Imperial Ballet for young children, vocational students and teachers. Adjudicated and delivered by professional classical ballet dancers and leading ballet teachers and examiners they are designed to inspire dancers of all ages and support them on their Imperial Classical Ballet journey. Most prominent within our events calendar are the Junior and Senior Ballet Awards in which entrants from Grades 1 to Advanced 1, trained in the work of the faculty, take part.
